Background of the Study

Political rallies have long been a staple in Nigerian electoral campaigns, serving as platforms for political parties to engage voters, communicate their policies, and rally support. In many parts of Nigeria, including Shani Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno State, political rallies are considered crucial in mobilizing voters, particularly among the youth demographic. The effectiveness of these rallies in promoting youth voter engagement, however, remains a contested issue (Yakubu & Adamu, 2023).

Shani LGA, located in a region where political participation can sometimes be hindered by security challenges, presents a unique context for evaluating the impact of political rallies on youth voter engagement. Despite security challenges, political parties continue to organize rallies aimed at galvanizing young voters, often using music, social media, and celebrity endorsements to appeal to this demographic (Aliyu & Bello, 2023).

Youth voter engagement is critical for the sustainability of democracy, as young people represent a significant portion of the electorate. However, research indicates that while political rallies may succeed in attracting large crowds, their ability to translate this engagement into actual voter turnout remains ambiguous (Suleiman & Hassan, 2024). In Shani LGA, there is a need for deeper analysis of how political rallies influence youth voting behavior, particularly in a region where political loyalty and engagement may be influenced by both local cultural dynamics and external factors like security.

This study aims to appraise the impact of political rallies on youth voter engagement in Shani LGA, Borno State, with a focus on the role these rallies play in motivating young people to participate in elections.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Political rallies are widely used in Nigeria as a tool for political engagement and voter mobilization, but their effectiveness in driving youth voter engagement remains unclear, especially in regions like Shani LGA. Despite the large crowds that often gather at these rallies, there is a lack of empirical evidence to determine whether these events truly motivate young people to vote or if they simply serve as a form of political spectacle (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2023). In Shani LGA, factors such as security concerns, political apathy, and social media influence complicate the relationship between political rallies and actual voter turnout. This study seeks to assess the real impact of political rallies on youth voter engagement in Shani LGA, with a focus on understanding the drivers and barriers to youth participation in the electoral process.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of political rallies on youth voter engagement in Shani LGA, Borno State.

  2. To identify the key factors that influence youth participation in political rallies in Shani LGA.

  3. To evaluate how political rallies translate into actual voter turnout among youth in Shani LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do political rallies influence youth voter engagement in Shani LGA?

  2. What factors drive or inhibit youth participation in political rallies in Shani LGA?

  3. To what extent do political rallies lead to increased voter turnout among youth in Shani LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Political rallies have a positive impact on youth voter engagement in Shani LGA.

  2. Factors such as security, media presence, and political party loyalty significantly influence youth participation in political rallies in Shani LGA.

  3. Political rallies in Shani LGA result in increased voter turnout among young people in the region.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the relationship between political rallies and youth voter engagement in Shani LGA, Borno State. By assessing how political rallies influence young voters, the research will contribute to the understanding of voter mobilization strategies and their effectiveness in driving electoral participation (Yakubu & Bello, 2023). The findings will be beneficial to political parties and candidates seeking to engage young voters more effectively, as well as to policymakers aiming to enhance democratic participation among youth.

Additionally, the research will offer recommendations for improving political rallies to make them more effective in motivating youth to vote, especially in regions where security concerns may limit engagement (Aliyu & Nwachukwu, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the impact of political rallies on youth voter engagement in Shani LGA, Borno State, particularly in the context of the 2023 general elections. It will explore how political rallies influence youth voter turnout and the factors that drive or inhibit engagement in these events.

A limitation of the study is that it may be challenging to obtain comprehensive data on voter turnout, especially as many youth may not have registered to vote or may not participate due to security concerns. Additionally, the study will focus solely on Shani LGA, limiting the generalizability of findings to other regions in Borno State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Political Rallies: Public gatherings organized by political parties to promote their platforms, mobilize voters, and generate support for candidates.

  • Youth Voter Engagement: The level of involvement and interest shown by young people in electoral processes, including attendance at political rallies and voting in elections.

  • Voter Turnout: The percentage of eligible voters who actually cast their votes during an election.
